FCA Market Watch on MAR risk assessments and surveillance – Metals market surveillance

The UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has issued the latest version of their Market Watch newsletter, which can be found here. The newsletter focuses on risk assessments that are carried out as part of the establishment of processes relating to monitoring for market abuse, insider trading and other relevant activity. It also looks at the use of order transaction surveillance systems, their calibration, and the processes deployed around them. While the newsletter focuses on fulfilling the obligations of MAR, many in the energy sector will apply similar strategies to ensuring compliance with REMIT.

This article on the BNN Bloomberg site reports on efforts to improve monitoring of the metals market following the suspension of the LME market relating to nickel following the price spike earlier this year. It looks at possible future efforts to perform surveillance as well as a likely requirement for some market participants to provide more transparency and reporting around OTC deals and positions.
