Pushback against market interventions – gas storage targets

EEX has yesterday issued this press release, which reports on a statement from their Exchange Council with respect to possible market interventions proposed by some EU Member states. The statement cautions against such interventions and also discusses measures related to the increased margin calls experienced by the industry, such as accepting non cash instruments including emissions allowances as collateral. It was reported yesterday that the ECB has turned down an industry request for related assistance (see here). The European Commission issued this communication on security of supply and affordable energy prices in late March.

Last month the European Commission also proposed measures to require that gas storage facilities reach certain levels by the winter, which can be found in this legislative proposal. A related press release and questions and answers page can be found here and here.
